Every radio show has a first moment. For the Balm Valley Authority, it is the Operator sitting by the creek under rhododendron, the water moving over old stones, fall deciding to arrive little by little. The first transmission is an origin story, not just for a show, but for a way of listening.

Transmission 01: Water Over Old Stones

"This is kind of a pilot episode where we're just messing around with a few ideas."

The first broadcast established the core frequencies: UFOs and cosmic signals, Appalachian folklore, crate-digger obscurities, resistance through psychedelia, and global funk. Jefferson Airplane asked if we had seen the saucers. Parliament landed the mothership. Jim Sullivan vanished into the New Mexico desert. The Barn Bats sang about the Brown Mountain Lights, ghostly orbs that have been seen floating above the North Carolina ridges for centuries.

Transmission 10: Sleepwalking Through the Mekong

A new origin. For the first time, a different voice: a Balm-bred drummer turned tourist guide, reporting from the Mekong Delta. "This one may sound a little different," he says. A departure from the normal show, and in the departure, a reminder of what the valley always was: a place where a voice can go anywhere and still be from somewhere. Signals of origin are not just firsts. They are foundations. Everything BVA would become is already present in that first transmission: the blend of local and global, the comfort with mystery, the creek as both literal setting and metaphorical frequency.
