The Creek

place

The first voice on BVA. Water over old stones, and the valley's carrier frequency.

The creek is not backdrop. It is the show's ground truth, its physical anchor in the Balm Valley. Water moving over old stones: a sound that predates radio, predates recording, predates human presence on this continent. A signal underneath every other signal.

Transmission 01: Water Over Old Stones

Fall 2023

"The creek is moving by under the rhododendron. Sometimes it's nice just to sit out by the creek and hear it going over those old stones."

The Operator's first words. The creek introduces itself before the show does. Fall arriving little by little. The sound of water shaping the opening of the first transmission, establishing the valley as a place of listening before anything else happens.

Transmission 02: High Wind Warning

Late Fall 2023

The creek at night. Dogs barking. Cold. The same water, different season. The transmission is darker, more direct, and the creek reflects it, still moving, but you can feel the temperature drop. The creek persists. It is always there, whether the broadcast is about UFOs or liberation or a banjo.

Transmission 05: The Longest Night

December 21, 2023, Winter Solstice

"Shall we gather at the creek, the water flows on like our spin around the sun. We've almost made it."

Winter solstice on the valley floor. The shortest day. The creek in December, still moving, cold but not frozen. The Operator opens with the water and the sun in the same breath. Closes with wind howling outside the window and snow falling. The water keeps moving. It always does.

Transmission 06: The First Thaw

January 4, 2024

The ice is thin at the edges. The water kept moving through the solstice and now moves a little easier. The Operator comes in from the cold and lets the creek carry a crate-digger's world tour down the valley, city pop, luk thung, desert blues, as if the water had always known the way to every one of those places.

Transmission 07: Sketches of the Valley

January 18, 2024

The Operator sits on the bank with a notebook, drawing the valley from twenty-seven angles. Every record a sketch, none of them the whole thing. The creek sketches its way downhill, keeping its own time underneath the songs.

Transmission 08: When the Revolution Comes

February 1, 2024

February on the creek. The dial turns toward the sound of people standing up, and the water runs through it all, through the Afrofuturism, through the freedom song from the bus boycott. The creek has heard every revolution this valley has produced. It keeps moving.

Transmission 09: Cold Damp Valley

February 15, 2024

Cold damp valley. The creek in February, half-thawed, running under the Chinese New Year songs and the corridos and the Sahel guitars. The Operator tunes to the water, and the water tunes back.

Transmission 10: Sleepwalking Through the Mekong

February 29, 2024

The creek becomes a canal, then a river. The guide reports from the Mekong Delta: "you're listening to runoff pour into an irrigation canal, feeding a coconut grove." The water that started in the valley keeps moving, all the way to the delta in southern Vietnam. Same water, different continent. The creek was always going somewhere.
