John Henry is one of America's deepest folk archetypes: a steel-driving man, a former enslaved person who takes on the machine and wins, then dies from the effort. The story has been sung in work camps and on chain gangs and in folk revivals for over a century. A worker who proved his humanity by outworking the machine that was built to replace him.
