The inbox has been open for about three weeks. We've received demos, Bandcamp links, private SoundCloud uploads, and one CD-R in a hand-painted sleeve that arrived by mail with no return address. That last one is still in rotation.
What We're Listening For
It's not genre. We don't have one. It's not production quality; some of the best things we've heard were recorded in bedrooms with one microphone and a lot of conviction.
What we're listening for is harder to name. It's the sense that the person who made this needed to make it. Not wanted. Needed. That the record exists because not making it wasn't an option.
You can hear that. It comes through in the performances, in the decisions, in the moments where someone took a risk instead of playing it safe. It's the opposite of content. It's proof that someone was alive in a particular way at a particular time and had the presence of mind to capture it.
Why We're Taking Our Time
There's no release schedule. No quarterly targets. No pressure to "build a catalog" quickly.
The first release sets the tone for everything that follows. It tells people what this label is about, not through a mission statement, but through an artifact. If we put out something safe, we're a safe label. If we put out something strange and beautiful and unmistakably itself, we're a label worth watching.
So we're waiting until we hear something that we can't not release. Something where the thought of someone else putting it out first makes us genuinely uneasy.
We've heard a few things that come close. Nothing yet that's made us cancel everything else and say this is the one. But we're close. We can feel it.
The first release will happen when it happens. Not before.
