On Listening Deeply

What running a label teaches you about paying attention.

Running a label, even a small one, changes how you listen.

You stop hearing music as background. You start hearing decisions. Why this snare sound? Why this reverb tail? Why did the vocal double come in on this word and not that one?

The Craft of Attention

Most people consume music the way they consume everything else: quickly, partially, while doing something else. That's fine; not everything needs deep attention. But if you want to make something that lasts, you have to learn to listen differently.

You have to hear what's not working. You have to hear what's almost working but needs one change. You have to hear when something is done and shouldn't be touched.

What This Means for the Label

The records we put out will be records that reward attention. Not because they're difficult, because they're crafted. Someone made decisions in there. Someone cared.

That's the bar. Not genre, not scene, not marketability. Just: did someone care enough to make every decision count?
